As a home business entrepreneur for over 10 years, I have tried my share of short cuts, and I if you’re going to use this strategy, please be careful. The one short cut I specifically want to address today is often confused with leverage, but couldn’t be further from it. This short cut or strategy is swiping information like ad copy or articles, making minimal changes to it, and calling it your own. Though this is a common strategy, keep in mind it could be a costly one.
If you’re building a home business, a quick and powerful way to get your business name out there is though article marketing. Now many new business owners will want to save time, so they search for articles or blogs on topics related to their home business. They then take the information they find, move it around and tweak it, then republish as their own. Now on the surface, this results in easy content for your business. But in the big picture, you may have just caused yourself more work.
One of most important things to consider is the information you used maybe copy written or trademarked. Depending on whose information you borrowed (sounds better that taken) you may be able to apologize and move on. However, you may run into someone that is not that forgiving, you could be sued and even have your business shut down. Either way, your short cut has back fired and you and your home business are back to square one.
Another example is of this short cut is when you are building a personal brand. Getting content to establish yourself or home business as an expert or authority is necessary to gain the trust of others. Now assuming there is no lawsuits for copy write infringement, using this strategy will quickly generate tons of half written information about you or your business. As a result, you can push this content out for others to review and rapidly build your brand. But as I mentioned above it is only half written content. At best, you have only changed some of the words, but it was still written by some else.
Your see everyone has a unique way of writing or talking and as you begin to publish original content, it will be obvious to those reading it that there is a difference between the new and older information. The older articles will not have the same flow as the newer ones do. Because people can see a difference, they may question whether you actually wrote the information. And this questioning of your authority or expertise could start costing you sales and customers.
Obviously, you want to keep this from happening. So you can do one of two things, remove the older articles and replace them with original content or rewrite the older material in your style with an original spin. Either way your short cut strategy just caused you a lot more work.
My advice is… do the work on the front end. Just like any other business, this too requires time and effort. Using the wrong strategies can cost you both time and money in the future. Remember… Success is not an event, but a process. Everything you need is in your heart, write from there and success will find you. Now turn on your computer and let’s build your success.
